The Paper

A Century on the Boulevard

Local news for Hollywood, California, since 1925 — a paper that has spent a hundred years insisting the neighborhood is worth reporting on.

The HY Times is a local newspaper. It covers one neighborhood — Hollywood, in the city of Los Angeles — and has done so, without a serious interruption, since 1925. That is the whole ambition. It has always been enough to fill a paper.

It was started by two people who felt overlooked. The downtown dailies of the day treated Hollywood as a rumor: a place things were said to happen, written about only when a studio wanted the publicity. Augusta Meridian, a printer, and Ezra Voss, a title-card writer left idle by the arrival of sound, thought the neighborhood deserved a paper that actually lived in it. They set up above Klein’s Hardware on Cahuenga Avenue and printed a first edition eight pages long. Four of those pages concerned a disputed streetcar stop.

A century later the beat is unchanged in spirit. We cover City Hall and the school board, the studios and the crews who work in them, the small businesses on the Boulevard and the people who keep them open. We give the parades and the zoning fights the same attention, on the theory that a neighborhood is the sum of both. The motto has not changed either: the neighborhood is the story.

The paper publishes six days a week in print and daily at hytimes.com, where the report has run since 2002. The rules are the same on paper and on a screen: we print what we can verify, we name our sources when we can, and when we are wrong we say so, in a place where you can find it. Our corrections page is not hidden, and we invite you to check. Older material is being added to the archive as the digitization project works its way backward.
